Nikon D7000 For Fast Action Snow Sports
So this year I'm trying something new. I have always shot sports videos with my trusted Sony VX-2100, well, up until 6 months ago I shot everything with the Sony VX-2100, but after taking Philip Blooms all day seminar on shooting with the HD DLSR's, I've just been in love with the final image that you get from those cameras. But one of the biggest problems with the HD DSLR's is "rolling shutter", a issue whereby the sensor captures each line of the frame row by row, so in the case of quick pans, you get this odd effect where the vertical lines in the image are skewed, and it feels like the image is "Jello"
A few months ago, after searching and preordering and begging and pleading, I was able to find and purchase a new Nikon D7000 HD DSLR, well, actually I bought three, and had to return them all because of hot/dead pixel issues, but the last one was good. Playing around with it the first thing I noticed was how well the jello/rolling shutter issue had been dealt with and this gave me an idea, what if I could shoot fast action with the Nikon D7000? I mean, its manual focus, but its just a stunning image. So to really test the cameras reduced rolling shutter issue, I took it out to Crotched Mountain, where i'm sort of the "offical photographer", and shot some of the kids doing tricks and jumps in the terrain park.
Boy did I get some interesting comments on this from the hardcore ski and snowboard kids. I beleive one actually called it "gay", which shows that I have alot to learn about ski movie "edits", so test or no test, I have to make the next one pretty good or I think they will eat me alive over there!
